Yes, resembling a pillow, a cushion diamond is a square or rectangular shape that has rounded corners and larger facets. They are also known as ‘candlelight diamond’. It usually features 58 facets and a typical ratio of 1.10 or greater for those which are more rectangular and 1.00 to 1.05 for those which are square.

A cross between an old mine cut and modern oval shape, cushion cut diamonds were immensely popular in the 19th century. There were then characterized for their chunkier pattern, large facets, medium to large culets and small tables. With the introduction of new techniques and new cutting styles, multiple variations of the cushion cut evolved, which are today identified as ‘Cushion Brilliant’, ‘Modified Cushion Brilliant. Some of the modern cushion cut diamonds are distinguished for their ‘sparkling water’ or what is also known as ‘crushed ice’ effect and may have an extra row of facets on the pavilion. The modern cushion cut diamonds are cut in such a way so as to maximize the light reflected. The different types of faceting patterns of the cushion cut, gives them a uniqueness of its own.

History of the Cushion Cut Diamonds:

The cushion cut diamond was created in the 19th century. The cushion cut diamonds remained popular until the early 20th century when new fancy shape diamonds entered the diamond world. Ever since its introduction it has undergone multiple transformation owing to new technologies and cutting equipment. Some of the famous diamonds in the world are cushion cuts; the Blue Hope Diamond (45.52cts), Yellow Tiffany Diamond (128.54cts), Regent Diamond (140.5cts) and the Logan Sapphire (423cts).
