A marriage is complete by an engagement ring followed by a wedding ring. Both are considered a significant symbol of commitment in the contemporary society. The tradition has existed for hundreds of years, and today it is observed in double the zeal and enthusiasm. Many people do not even realize that these are two pieces until the day of their own engagement. Some use the term interchangeably while some have heard the usage of one more than the other. However, there lies a stark difference between the two. Let us take a look at the difference between the two.
What is an Engagement Ring?
The ring with which one proposes marriage to her partner is termed an engagement ring. When a woman accepts the engagement ring, it means she has accepted his marriage proposal. She is expected to wear it on her ring finger, starting from the moment of the proposal. A ring on her ring finger is not just for aesthetic purpose rather it is something that stands as the bearer of the news that she is taken and committed and thereby no longer available.
An engagement ring is usually something extravagant and exorbitant. It usually has a big diamond or other gemstone as the center stone which is mounted on an intricately designed metal band. Over time the engagement ring became a representation of the man’s wealth. However, this notion is no longer accepted, though the tradition of proposing with an engagement ring has lived on.
What is a Wedding Ring?
The ring which is exchanged between partners during the wedding ceremony is termed the wedding ring. In this case, both the partners receive a wedding band after the vows are exchanged. It is worn on the third finger of the left hand from that day onwards. The ring symbolizes love, togetherness and faithfulness of your spouse towards you and vice versa. The round shape of the ring not only symbolizes infinity and eternity, but it also symbolizes a gateway to all future events.
A wedding ring is plain looking and may have a small stone or two in simple settings. Like the engagement ring, they do not need to possess a center diamond or any prominent gemstone. Men’s wedding rings are typically thicker in width than the women’s wedding rings. They may or may not possess small diamonds and designs.
How are the engagement ring and wedding ring worn?
On the day of the wedding, the bride usually removes the engagement ring and slips it on her other hand so that they can wear the wedding ring. After the wedding, if they so desire they stack the wedding ring underneath the engagement ring. Some women prefer to wear only one ring to represent both. Engagement ring and wedding ring are today available in the form of bridal set. Though it makes sense to purchase a bridal set as it spares the couple from the struggle of trying to later find a matching wedding ring, however, you can even buy them separately and have them matched later.
